This is a crosspost from hello! Food
For as long as I can remember, rice has always been a part of my life. Rice is the staple in Japan, and everyone eats it. You eat it for breakfast, you eat it for lunch, and you eat it for dinner. And everyone says to me, "but Yoshi, rice is so bland. How can you eat rice by itself without something like butter or sugar on it?" Ah, and that's where I can teach you. You don't really eat rice "plain" per se. Gather around, and I'll show you how to eat rice.
When I prepare a meal, many people notice a few things. I don't know if it's Japanese in general, which some people think, but my food seems to be separated a lot. But that's another story. Anyways, I usually eat my rice in it's own bowl. i.e. A rice bowl. Rice bowls come in many sizes and colours. I really like my rice bowl, although I'm thinking about buying a new one, only because it's so old.
With a bowl of rice, you can eat many types of food. Like a buffet, you can choose what to put on top of your rice. I use the rice bowl as a "staging area" to prepare the food to be eaten. This does a couple things. It helps to keep the area non-messy, by transporting the food (which can be anything from beef and broccoli to lemon chicken) directly to the bowl, which I move close to the master dish of food. This also allows me to bring the food closer to my mouth, because I bring the bowl up to my mouth to eat it.
While this all may sound crude to you, by all means, this is acceptable behavior. (At least in my house)
So did you see how you're not really eating "plain" rice? You don't need butter. Look at all the savory juices that came with your beef and broccoli. You can get the residual "sauce" from the beef and broccoli as you put it in your rice bowl. There's nothing wrong with this.
Another example would be gyoza. You get your gyoza, dip it into the soy sauce (with ra-yu or any other type of chili sauce) and then you put it in your rice bowl, covering the rice with soy sauce and the juices of the gyoza. There's nothing quite like it, honestly.
That's how to eat rice.
Yoshi is now hungry for some gyoza.
